The Royal Stables, Abu Dhabi

I was honoured to be invited to the Royal Stables, Abu Dhabi, along with Rob Jenkins to work with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Paralympic riders, Wafa Aldahman and Fatima Albluoshi. The invitation came from Laura Richardson, General Manager of The Royal Stables, who trains the two Para riders along with running the stables. Laura had the inkling that Wafa with her disabilities, may be better suited to riding sidesaddle, so Rob and I went for a week at the end of October for me to introduce Wafa to sidesaddle and Rob to look at ways of customising a saddle for her.

The Royal Stables proved to be a magnificent setting for the week, which started with me seeing Wafa on the horse simulator. Having seen her riding astride first, I could see that it was difficult and uncomfortable for her to sit straight and maintain her position, so I was filled with optimism seeing her have her first go on a sidesaddle.

The next few days, we progressed onto Wafa having her first experience of riding sidesaddle on a real horse. Her 2 mounts, Chester and Popcorn, have been well chosen for the role they are to perform, with super temperaments. It was very evident from the outset that Wafa was enjoying the experience of riding aside, starting off on the lead rein as she learned how to balance herself and progressing to going solo by Day 4. It was an emotional experience to witness the joy that Wafa displayed at this new way of riding for her.

Alongside working with Wafa, Rob and I also looked at ways of helping Fatima’s comfort in the saddle. Whilst riding sidesaddle wasn’t an option for Fatima, Rob is working on the creative side of making a bespoke saddle that will provide enhanced comfort and stability for her.

As our time at The Royal Stables came to a conclusion, I reflected back on what a wonderful visit it had been. From the opulence of the stables to seeing these two wonderful ladies working with such determination to succeed was truly inspiring.

Rob and I are looking forward to returning in December for the next stage of the journey towards Los Angeles Paralympics 2028.

الإسطبلات الملكية، أبوظبي

تشرفتُ بدعوتي إلى الإسطبلات الملكية في أبوظبي، برفقة روب جينكينز، للعمل مع الفارستين البارالمبيتين الإماراتيتين، وفاء الدهمان وفاطمة البلوشي. جاءت الدعوة من لورا ريتشاردسون، المديرة العامة للإسطبلات الملكية، التي تُدرّب الفارستين البارالمبيتين وتُدير الإسطبلات. شعرت لورا أن وفاء، نظرًا لإعاقتها، قد تكون أكثر ملاءمة لركوب السرج الجانبي، لذلك ذهبنا أنا وروب لمدة أسبوع في نهاية أكتوبر لأُعرّف وفاء على ركوب السرج الجانبي، وليبحث روب عن طرق لتخصيص سرج لها.

كانت الإسطبلات الملكية مكانًا رائعًا لهذا الأسبوع، الذي بدأ برؤيتي لوفاء على جهاز محاكاة ركوب الخيل. بعد أن رأيتها تركب على ظهرها لأول مرة، لاحظتُ صعوبة جلوسها بشكل مستقيم والحفاظ على وضعيتها، لذا غمرني التفاؤل برؤيتها تجربتها الأولى في ركوب السرج الجانبي. في الأيام القليلة التالية، انتقلنا إلى تجربة وفاء الأولى في ركوب الخيل على سرج جانبي على حصان حقيقي. وقد تم اختيار جواديها، تشيستر وبوبكورن، بعناية فائقة لأداء الدور المنوط بهما، بفضل طباعهما المميزة. كان واضحًا منذ البداية أن وفاء تستمتع بتجربة الركوب على جانب الحصان، حيث بدأت باللجام الرئيسي بينما كانت تتعلم التوازن، ثم تطورت إلى الركوب منفردة بحلول اليوم الرابع. لقد كانت تجربة مؤثرة أن أشهد فرحة وفاء بهذه الطريقة الجديدة في الركوب.

إلى جانب العمل مع وفاء، بحثنا أنا وروب أيضًا عن طرق لمساعدة فاطمة على الشعور بالراحة في السرج. وبينما لم يكن ركوب السرج الجانبي خيارًا متاحًا لفاطمة، يعمل روب على الجانب الإبداعي من خلال صنع سرج مخصص يوفر لها راحة وثباتًا أكبر.

مع انتهاء زيارتنا للإسطبلات الملكية، تذكرت كم كانت رائعة تلك الزيارة. من فخامة الإسطبلات إلى رؤية هاتين السيدتين الرائعتين تعملان بعزيمة لتحقيق النجاح، كان الأمر ملهمًا حقًا.

نتطلع أنا وروب إلى العودة في ديسمبر للمرحلة التالية من رحلتنا نحو دورة الألعاب البارالمبية في لوس أنجلوس ٢٠٢٨.
