Hartpury Clinics

This weekend saw a return to Hartpury for a mechanical horse clinic. 14 riders of differing levels of experience came to experience the benefits of riding Margaret, the mechanical horse at Hartpury.
I always really enjoy these days as the simulator provides riders with the opportunity to really work on their position, without having to worry about what the horse is doing- there's certainly no unwelcome spooks or bucks to worry about! Modelled on the paces of a dressage horse, we're really lucky to have the use of this facility at Hartpury as not only does Margaret go through all paces on the flat, she can also be used to practise jumping technique, either over show jumps or even going cross country.

From an instructional perspective, in an ideal world, I'd start every rider new to side-saddle on the simulator as I can fine tune the rider's position and balance, moving round from all angles to check straightness from in front and behind and posture from the side. The rider is also able to see themselves in big mirrors, which I also find very beneficial.

Some of my riders this weekend were brand new to the wonderful art of side-saddle and were understandably a little apprehensive before they got going, imagining that they would spend the lesson in walk. To their surprise and joy, within the course of the lesson, they were trotting and cantering happily, whilst also undertaking exercises to work on suppleness and balance in the saddle and maybe doing a stint without their stirrup to improve their leg position, recognising for themselves the importance of their right leg for security and stability in the saddle.

Other riders who have been riding side-saddle for some time, wanted fine tuning for the forthcoming show season or to practise getting their jumping position safe and effective before trying on their own horses. It certainly is fun trying to navigate your way around the cross country course!
If you fancy giving it a go, keep an eye on my clinic dates. The next date at Hartpury is 15th March, and I'm hoping to go back to running these clinics monthly this year. Please message me if you'd like more information about taking part in a future mechanical horse clinic.
