The SSA Camp North returned in fantastic style this year, bringing together 24 riders (& their entourage) from across all four countries of the UK for a truly memorable few days at Greenlands Equestrian Centre, Carlisle. It was once again a resounding success, organised by Area 9 Chairman and Secretary, Steve and Karrie McGill. It was also a real surprise and pleasure to see Henrietta Barton, SSA Chairman attending the event on Friday and Saturday to chat and socialise with all the attendees.

For the 3rd year, I was delighted to be invited back as one of the four instructors having instructed at camp since its inception, though this was its first year at Greenlands, which proved to be the perfect venue.

There was a wonderful mix of both novice and experienced side saddle riders, creating an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone could develop their skills and confidence. Over the course of the camp, riders took part in a variety of sessions, including individual lessons, group work, and jumping instruction. This blend ensured that each participant could focus on personal goals while also enjoying the camaraderie of riding with others. When they weren’t riding, they were able to take part in demonstrations about show ring turnout and costumes.

One of the highlights of the camp was undoubtedly the final day show, which showcased the progress made throughout the week. With classes for both novices and open riders, there was something for everyone. Competitors took part in a diverse range of classes, including equitation, classical and contemporary ladies, costume, riding club horse, and the ever-popular champagne challenge. The show captured the spirit of beautiful side saddle riding, combining tradition, skill, and a sense of fun.

Beyond the riding, the atmosphere throughout the camp was exceptional. It was a chance not only to meet new people but also to reconnect with familiar faces, strengthening the close-knit side saddle community. Laughter, encouragement, and shared passion were constant themes both in and out of the saddle.

Greenlands Equestrian Centre proved to be an ideal venue, offering excellent facilities including a spacious indoor school able to accommodate three lessons at the same time, a wonderful outdoor arena with a great selection of jumps as well as on-site catering, and plenty of room for horses and riders alike. The setting allowed the camp to run smoothly while providing comfort and convenience for all involved.

Overall, Side Saddle Association Camps North was a resounding success—full of learning, friendship, and unforgettable moments. It’s safe to say that everyone left inspired and already looking forward to the next one.
